2045 hours. Licia knew she had to hurry if she were going to get to Gully’s before he closed. The rain added to the nighttime gloom. Splashing through puddles made more noise than she liked. If she hurried, she could just catch Gully before he closed up for the night, and she could fence the necklace she lifted from that penthouse.
Only one more alley. But then Licia stopped short. Three men were hanging around the opposite end of the alley. She recognized two of them: two of her old associates who’d love to collect the reward the cops have on her.
Why now? Gully’s probably fetching his keys and reaching for the light switch right now! The group finally moved on, laughing at a joke one of them had told, but Licia already knew it was too late. She’d have to keep the necklace until the next day.
As she turned to leave the alley, her eye caught a water-soaked poster on the ground. On it, a smiling Bryana Daltore struck a classic dance pose, backed up by several other dancers. Licia looked carefully at the line of dancers. Once upon a time, one of them might have been her.
All Licia Chan wanted to do was be a dancer, but life kept throwing her curves. After unwanted stints in a factory and the Interstellar Navy, she thought she finally had her chance, but instead she ended up on the streets mere kilometers from her life’s goal. Recruited as a burglar for a gang, Licia — now the infamous thief known as “Shadowdancer” — now feels trapped in a life she never wanted.
