The 17 images in this pack are from The Northmen in Britain, a 1913 book by Eleanor Means Hull, author of The Poem-Book of the Gael, Cuchulain, the Hound of Ulster, Pagan Ireland, and Early Christian Ireland. Hull was a writer, journalist and scholar of Old Irish.
Hull was born in England, of a County Down family, the daughter of Edward Hull. She was educated at Alexandra College, Dublin and was a student of Irish Studies. On 26 April 1898 she was a co-founder of the Irish Texts Society for the publication of early manuscripts. She was president of the Irish Literary Society. She died in Wimbledon, England on 13 January 1935, two days shy of her 75th birthday.
The artist is Morris Meredith Williams. Williams was a British painter and illustrator educated at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He was an art master at Fettes College an artist and prolific illustrator of children’s books of myth, folklore and history. After service in the Great War, which influenced his later work, he worked in landscape and genre painting, stained glass, engraving and illustration. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and at the Royal Scottish Academy. Several of his works are held by museums and galleries in Liverpool and by National Galleries of Scotland.
