Alignment in the world’s most popular roleplaying games is often tricky, measuring your character’s motivations in abstract terms like “good and evil” or “law and chaos.” Alignment is sometimes viewed as a straight jacket, and it is a frequent source of argument among players and game masters.
This variant rule replaces traditional alignment with a more functional system—thematic alignment. Instead of getting hung up on abstract cosmic distinctions, players choose an alignment that matches their character theme. It helps inform their roleplaying by providing a framework through which they make character decisions. It also provides a meaningful way to change their alignments through character growth when they challenge this theme.
This supplement offers 24 different thematic alignments that players can use out of the box. It also includes a short guide on how you can easily create new thematic alignments for your own games.
