Publisher: Thomas DavisÉlan VITAL – Éxpansion I (ÉVxI) is a concise set of rules which demonstrates in detail a method of combining and explanding two of my previously published one-page rule sets. These are the original Élan VITAL, a one-page rule set of character design, and the Matriarch Decks randomizer. To this, ÉVxI adds the concepts of Skills, Vocations, Techniques, Actions, and Focus rules.
Each of these works can be helpful in making or playing your own games, but Élan VITAL – Éxpansion I is designed, itself, to be a minimal rule set that needs only a setting, some scratch paper, pencils, and at least one deck of common playing cards to enjoy gaming without further preparation.
VITA: Four core abilities, Verve, Intellect, Thew, and Alacrity form the basis of all checks. Skills are defined as all combinations of any three VITA abilites. Expendables, Élan, Luck, and Health describe a character’s available reserves. Business-card sized character sheets (Échards) are provided and explained. Cards: The Matriarch Decks rules, which use common playing cards (52 cards, 4 suits) are expanded with Focus and Action rules to explain how much each character can do per round. A “five card draw” can define countless variations of up to four actions.
Advice on how to include these rules in your own game (quite easily, thanks to the CC BY 4 license) as well as suggestions on how best to flesh out a campaign and full, free-standing rpg is included, complete with a list of literary sources of inspiration.
Source text: When you purchase this rule set (even if you do so for $0), you also get a copy of the Libre Office document used to make it. Edit it to create your own ÉVxI variants.
