101 Deadly Dragons
The adventurers, having heard of a dragon lairing nearby, have sought out their prey. They are now approaching the cave reported to be the lair of Heyezos the Terrible, described as enormous, terrifying, and most importantly, red.
Party leader: This looks to be the place. I can smell reptilian musk. Our dragon is just ahead.
Kalthros: I have fire protection spells ready. I’ll cast them just before we start.
Jarmak: I’ll sneak a look into the cave. What do I see?
GM: There’s a dragon there, all right. It seems to be about forty or fifty feet long. It’s dark red with very dark tiger stripes. It has sort of a lizard-like head with a mane of navy-blue bristles around it. It’s got big wings, a sort of a fin down the back, and you can’t see any legs.
Kalthros: I’ll cast fire protection spells on everyone but Garin; he has a potion.
Lyry: I’ll be ready with burn salve as well as magical healing.
Party leader: Okay, we’re going in.
The dragon, which looks like a giant winged serpent, rears its head and glares at the adventurers. It has curling tusks like a boar; they have a moment to notice that before it opens its mouth and breathes forth a cloud of glowing, pale-blue gas.
GM: I need a polymorph saving roll for everyone.
Frantic rolling of dice ensues.
Party leader: What? Gas? But it’s red! *rolls a die* Okay, I made it.
Kalthros: I made it.
Lyry: Me too, just barely.
Garin: I’m good.
Jarmak: Ribbit!
Welcome to the “101 Things” collections
This, like the Item Histories, is somewhat unusual. There are just 101 entries in this collection, but they are more detailed (only a handful fit on a page) than the more common 1001 Things listings.
No more conveniently color-coded dragons! Each and every dragon should be unique, and these certainly are. They come in all sizes, shapes, and descriptions. Some have wings, some have different types of wings, some have none. They have various numbers of legs, different types of heads, etc. Their breath weapons, resistances, personality characteristics, and special abilities all differ, too.
Please note that these dragons require some input from you as a gamemaster to give them suitable stats for your game system, including the amount of damage they do. There are just far too many game systems, and individual game situations, for any “one size fits all” solution to work. Since dragons, the ultimate apex predator, should always be planned and distributed by the GM, this should not be an issue.
